How to Protect Your Knees in the Trades
Nobody warns you about your knees when you get into the trades. They warn you about your back. They warn you about your hearing, your eyes, and your lungs. Then ten or fifteen years in, you notice you are using your hand to push off the floor when you stand up, and you start planning your day around how many times you have to get down and back up again.
Knees are the quietest injury in the trades. They do not happen in one moment you can point to. They happen across thousands of hours of kneeling on concrete, and by the time you feel it, a lot of the damage is already done.

What Kneeling Actually Does to Your Knee
Two separate things go wrong when you kneel on a hard surface for a living, and they are worth understanding separately because different gear fixes each one.
The first problem is contact pressure. Sitting between your kneecap and your skin is a small fluid filled sac called the prepatellar bursa. Its job is to let the skin glide over the bone. When you drop your body weight onto that spot on concrete, over and over, day after day, the bursa gets irritated and fills with fluid. That is prepatellar bursitis, and in the trades it goes by nicknames like housemaid's knee and carpet layer's knee. It looks like a swollen lump sitting right on top of the kneecap. Sometimes it drains and comes back. Sometimes it gets infected, because the skin over a chronically irritated knee cracks and lets bacteria in.
This is the problem knee pads solve directly. You are putting foam between the bursa and the floor.
The second problem is joint load. Deep knee bend puts the cartilage and the meniscus under loads that standing does not. The meniscus is the shock absorbing pad inside the joint, and once it tears you are looking at a surgeon. NIOSH researchers reviewing the literature on osteoarthritis listed kneeling among the occupational risk factors associated with the disease, alongside crawling, bending, stair climbing, and whole body vibration, with knee osteoarthritis singled out as the joint where heavy physical workload matters most.
Knee pads help with this one indirectly by changing how you distribute weight and letting you stay in better positions longer. They do not eliminate it. The only thing that eliminates joint load is not being on your knees, which is why the best knee strategy is a mix of gear and work habits.
The Numbers Nobody Shows You in Trade School
NIOSH ran an investigation into carpet layers and published an alert on it. The findings are the clearest data we have on what kneeling work does to a workforce.
Carpet layers make up less than 0.06 percent of the United States workforce. They file 6.2 percent of all workers' compensation claims for traumatic knee injury. That works out to a rate 108 times what you would expect from their share of the workforce.
NIOSH documented bursitis of the knee, fluid buildup requiring aspiration, skin infections, and a range of other knee symptoms in that population. And here is the part that matters for anyone reading this: the investigation noted that these workers spent the majority of their time on their knees, but seldom used protective knee pads. NIOSH's recommendations included knee pads and power stretchers in place of knee kickers.
Carpet is the extreme case because of the knee kicker, a tool you literally strike with your knee. But the underlying exposure is not unique to flooring. NIOSH described those workers as spending the majority of their work time on their knees, and plenty of trades sit in that same territory without ever thinking about it.
Which Trades Are Hardest on Knees
If your work shows up on this list, knee protection is not optional gear. It is the same category as safety glasses.
- Flooring, carpet, and tile. The worst exposure in the trades. Kneeling is the working position, not an occasional one.
- Plumbing. Under sinks, in crawl spaces, on slab, setting closet flanges. Almost all of it happens below your waist.
- HVAC. Furnace work, air handlers in closets, ductwork in crawl spaces and attics.
- Electrical. Outlet and device work sits at floor level. Panel work, floor boxes, and rough in all put you down there.
- Concrete and masonry. Finishing work is done on your knees, on the hardest surface on this list, often with wet material soaking into whatever you are kneeling on.
- Automotive. Wheels, brakes, exhaust hangers, undercar inspection, and anything on a low lift. Shop floors are concrete with oil on top.
- Roofing. Constant kneeling on an angle, which adds a twisting load the flat trades do not deal with.
The automotive side has its own wrinkle worth calling out. Shop concrete is not clean concrete. It has oil, coolant, brake fluid, and metal shavings on it, which destroys standard foam and eats cheap covers. The Four Types of Knee Protection
They are not interchangeable. Buying the wrong type is the most common reason people decide knee pads "do not work" and go back to bare knees.
Strap On Pads With a Soft Cap
Foam or gel padding with a fabric or rubber outer surface. They grip well, they will not scratch a finished floor or a fender, and they let you feel what is under you. Best for indoor finish work, automotive, and anything where you are kneeling on a surface you can damage. The tradeoff is that a sharp object underneath still transmits through.
Strap On Pads With a Hard Cap
Same padding, but with a molded plastic shell on the outside. The shell spreads the load across the whole pad instead of the one point you are kneeling on, and it lets you pivot and slide without grinding your knee into debris. Best for rough concrete, gravel, framing, and demo. The tradeoff is that hard caps slip on smooth surfaces and can mark up finished floors.
Articulated Knee Protectors
These are the wearable protectors built around a wedge or hinged design that shifts load off the kneecap and spreads it down onto the shin and lower leg. They cost meaningfully more than standard pads. They are aimed at people whose job is kneeling all day, every day, and who have already started feeling it. If you are in flooring or you have had a bursitis flare, this category is worth the money.
Kneeling Mats and Shop Pads
Not worn on your body. A thick pad you carry to the job and set on the floor. The advantage is real thickness, usually an inch or more, which no strap on pad can match, and no straps around your legs. The disadvantage is you have to reposition it every time you move. Best for stationary work: a technician at one corner of a vehicle, a plumber under one sink, an electrician on one panel.
A lot of experienced tradespeople end up owning a strap on set for mobile work and a mat for anything they will be parked on for an hour.
What to Look For When You Buy
Foam density over foam thickness. A thick pad made of soft foam bottoms out under body weight in a few weeks and then you are kneeling on the shell. Dense closed cell foam or a gel and foam combination holds up. Press hard with your thumb. If it flattens easily in the store, it will flatten permanently on the job.
Oil and fluid resistance if you work around chemicals. Nitrile rubber, usually listed as NBR, resists oil, brake fluid, and coolant. Standard foam absorbs them, and then you are kneeling on a sponge full of used oil that goes through to your skin. This is the single biggest material difference between a general purpose pad and one built for shop work. Strap design, because this decides whether you actually wear them. Two straps beat one. They should sit above and below the calf muscle, never directly behind the knee joint, where they cut off circulation and make your lower legs go numb. Elastic straps with quick clips beat velcro, because velcro loads up with sawdust, carpet fiber, and metal shavings and stops holding within a season.
Fit that stays put when you walk. A pad that rotates around your leg between kneels is a pad you will take off by lunch. If it slides on the showroom floor, it will slide worse when your pants are wet.
The Mistakes That Wreck Good Knees
Only wearing pads for the big jobs. The damage is cumulative. It comes from the hundreds of two minute kneels, not the one four hour job you geared up for. If you take the pads off between jobs, you are getting a fraction of the protection you paid for.
Dropping onto your knees instead of lowering. Every time you let your body weight fall the last several inches, you are delivering an impact to the bursa. Go down one knee at a time under control. This one habit change costs nothing and prevents a lot of flare ups.
Staying down when you do not have to. A rolling stool, a creeper, or a bucket turned over gets you off the joint entirely. In a shop, raising the vehicle six inches on the lift can be the difference between kneeling and squatting. Free, and better than any pad.
Kneeling on the same knee all day. Most people have a dominant kneeling leg and it takes all the wear. Consciously switch.
Ignoring what is on your feet. Worn out boots and dead insoles change your alignment and push more load into the knee on every step, and you take thousands of steps a shift. Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore
Get these looked at by an actual doctor. This is a gear guide, not medical advice, and the difference between a bursa problem and a meniscus problem matters a lot for what happens next.
- A visible swelling on the front of the kneecap. Classic prepatellar bursitis. Especially urgent if the skin is red, hot, or you have a fever, because an infected bursa needs treatment fast.
- Catching, locking, or the knee giving out. These point at the meniscus or the joint surface, not the bursa, and no amount of padding fixes them.
- Pain going down stairs or standing up from a chair. Often the earliest sign of wear behind the kneecap.
- Swelling that shows up hours after work and is gone by morning. Easy to write off. It is the joint telling you the daily load exceeds what it can recover from.
What This Actually Costs
Knee protection is one of the cheapest categories in your gear. A strap on pair and a shop mat together cost less than a single mid range hand tool, and the articulated protectors, the most expensive option in the category, still cost less than one day of missed flat rate hours.
Compare that to what a knee costs. Time off with no flat rate hours. A trade you can no longer physically do at forty five, in a field where the experienced people are the ones making real money. The tradespeople who make it a full career are not the toughest ones. They are the ones who protected the joints early, when nothing hurt yet.

Kneeling is a measurable occupational hazard with real data behind it, not a thing you tough out. NIOSH found one kneeling trade filing traumatic knee injury claims at 108 times the expected rate while seldom wearing pads. That combination is the whole story.
Own two kinds of protection, a strap on pair for moving work and a mat for stationary work. Buy on foam density and strap design instead of price. Replace them when the foam stops coming back. Get off your knees whenever the job allows it.
