How to Protect Your Back in the Trades
Every trade has a story about the guy who blew his back out lifting something stupid. That story is misleading, because it makes back injury sound like an event.
For most tradespeople it is not an event. It is a bill that comes due after fifteen years of loads that were slightly too heavy, in positions that were slightly too awkward, more times than anyone counted.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 2.5 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2024. When they sorted the serious cases by what caused them, one category came out on top by a wide margin: overexertion, repetitive motion, and bodily conditions, at 946,290 cases across 2023 and 2024. Not falls. Not machinery. Not being struck by something. Bodies doing ordinary work in ordinary positions, too many times.

It Is Rarely the Heavy Lift
People picture back injury as a max effort deadlift gone wrong. Sometimes it is. Usually it is not, because when a load is obviously heavy, you get help, you use a machine, or you brace properly. The obvious hazard gets respected.
The injuries come from the loads that do not trigger any of that. NIOSH describes the exposure plainly: workers who often lift, stoop, kneel, twist, grip, stretch, or reach overhead, or who work in other awkward positions, are at risk of developing work related musculoskeletal disorders.
Read that list again. There is no weight threshold in it. Position is doing as much damage as weight. A twenty pound part lifted out of a wheel well at arm's length, with your spine twisted, loads your back harder than a hundred pounds held tight against your chest. Your body does not care what the part weighs. It cares about leverage.
That is why the trades that hurt backs are not only the heavy ones. Anyone spending the day down on their knees, bent into a cabinet, reaching into an engine bay, or working overhead is accumulating the same debt.
The Back Belt Question
Walk into a supply house and you will find a wall of back belts. Plenty of shops hand them out. Some require them.
NIOSH studied whether they work, and the answer was no.
Their published conclusion is that there is insufficient scientific evidence that back belts actually deliver what is promised, and that the Institute does not recommend the use of back belts to prevent injuries among workers who have never been injured.
They went further and flagged a specific danger. Workers wearing a back belt may attempt to lift more weight, because the belt creates a false sense of security. So the belt does not protect you, and it may talk you into a lift you would otherwise have thought twice about.
One important exception: if a doctor has prescribed a brace for an injury you already have, that is a medical device for a diagnosed problem, and you follow your doctor. What the research addresses is healthy workers strapping on a belt as prevention.
What NIOSH Says to Do Instead
Their recommendation is blunt, and it is not about your posture. The most effective way to prevent back injury is to redesign the work environment and work tasks to reduce the hazards of lifting.
Specifically:
- Keep the load close to your body. The single highest leverage change on this list. Distance from your spine multiplies the force going through it.
- Use mechanical aids. Hoists, hand trucks, carts, jacks, lifts. If a machine can carry it, the machine should carry it.
- Reduce the weight of the load. Break it into two trips. Two trips are free. A disc is not.
Notice what is not on that list: gritting your teeth and lifting with your legs. Form is worth having, but it is the last line of defense, not the first. Changing the lift beats improving how you survive the lift.
Applying That on a Real Job
The advice above is written for safety managers. Here is what it looks like from the floor.
Raise the work instead of lowering yourself. A vehicle six inches higher on the lift, a part set on a stand instead of the floor, a toolbox drawer at waist height instead of ankle height. Every inch you bring the work up is a bend you never make.
Break the twist. Most bad loading is not bending, it is bending plus rotating. Move your feet to face the load instead of turning your spine toward it. This is the cheapest habit change available and the one people skip most.
Set things down at the height you will pick them up. Whoever puts the part on the floor is creating a lift for whoever picks it up next. Often that is you, twenty minutes later.
Get the cart. Walking to get a cart feels slower than carrying it. It is slower today and faster across a career.
Stop working in a position you know is bad because the job is almost done. The last ten minutes of a job, when you are tired and committed and not going to reposition, is where a lot of this happens.
The Gear That Actually Matters
Not much of the equipment sold for backs does anything. Two categories genuinely change the load on your spine.
What is under your feet. You are on concrete for most of a shift, and worn out boots and dead footbeds change your alignment all the way up the chain. This is the least glamorous and most reliable improvement available. What lets you stop bending. A rolling stool, a creeper, a parts cart, a magnetic tray that keeps hardware off the floor. None of it is marketed as back equipment. All of it removes bends from your day, which is the thing that actually works.
Kneeling deserves a mention here too, because people trade a back problem for a knee problem by going down onto bare concrete to avoid stooping. Protect both, and read up on knee protection in the trades before you make that swap.
Common Is Not Normal
The most damaging idea in the trades is that a bad back is the price of admission. It gets repeated by people who are proud of what the work cost them, and it convinces younger tradespeople to ignore the early signals.

When to Stop Managing It Yourself
This is a work practices guide, not medical advice. Get in front of a doctor for any of these:
- Pain that radiates down a leg, rather than staying in your back
- Numbness or tingling in a leg or foot
- Weakness in a leg or foot, or a foot that catches when you walk
- Pain that wakes you up at night or is there before you have done anything
- Any loss of bladder or bowel control. This one is an emergency room visit, not an appointment.
Early is cheap and late is expensive. That is true of the injury and it is true of the career.
Bottom Line
The largest single category of serious workplace injury is bodies doing ordinary work in bad positions. It is not the heroic lift, it is the thousand small ones.
Skip the back belt, because the research does not support it and it may make you braver than you should be. Keep loads tight to your body, use the machine, split the load, move your feet instead of twisting, and raise the work rather than lowering yourself. Fix what is under your feet. Get the early signals looked at instead of proving you can work through them.
