How to Become a Welder in 2026

Welding is one of the fastest trades to enter and one of the most versatile. A 6 to 12 month certificate program gets you working. From there, your earning potential depends entirely on how specialized you become and how good your welds are. A structural welder at a fabrication shop earns a solid living. A pipeline welder working shutdowns earns six figures. An underwater welder earns whatever they can negotiate, because very few people on earth can do that job.

This guide covers the full path from zero experience to working welder, including the different types of welding, what training looks like, and where the money is.

What Welders Actually Do

Welders join metal parts together using heat. That one-sentence description covers an enormous range of work. Construction welders connect structural steel on buildings and bridges. Manufacturing welders assemble everything from car frames to pressure vessels. Maintenance welders repair equipment in factories, refineries, and power plants. Pipeline welders join pipe sections for oil, gas, and water infrastructure. Aerospace welders work on aircraft and spacecraft components where a single bad weld can be catastrophic.

The common thread is precision. A good weld is not just strong. It is consistent, clean, and meets specific code requirements for the application. Welding is a skill trade in the truest sense. Your hands, your eyes, and your experience determine the quality of the work. No machine or computer can replace the judgment a skilled welder applies on every joint.

Types of Welding You Need to Know

MIG (GMAW). Metal Inert Gas welding uses a continuously fed wire electrode and shielding gas. It is the easiest process to learn and the most common in manufacturing and fabrication. Most welding programs start here. MIG is fast, forgiving, and works well on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Stick (SMAW). Shielded Metal Arc Welding uses a consumable electrode coated in flux. It is the most versatile process and works outdoors, in wind, and in dirty conditions where MIG struggles. Construction, pipeline, and maintenance welding rely heavily on stick. It is harder to learn than MIG but essential for field work.

TIG (GTAW). Gas Tungsten Arc Welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler rod. It produces the highest quality welds and is used on thin materials, exotic metals, and applications where appearance and precision matter (aerospace, food processing equipment, custom fabrication). TIG is the hardest process to learn and the one that separates average welders from great ones.

Flux-Core (FCAW). Similar to MIG but uses a flux-filled wire instead of shielding gas. Works well outdoors and in heavy fabrication where penetration is critical. Common in structural steel and shipbuilding.

Step 1: Get Trained

Trade school or community college (6 to 24 months). This is the most common path. Certificate programs (6 to 12 months) cover MIG, stick, and basic blueprint reading. Associate degree programs (2 years) add TIG, pipe welding, metallurgy, and inspection. Costs range from $2,000 at a community college to $15,000 or more at a private school. Many programs qualify for financial aid and Pell Grants.

Apprenticeship. Union welders enter through apprenticeship programs (typically with the Ironworkers, Boilermakers, Pipefitters, or Sheet Metal Workers unions). These are 3 to 4 year paid training programs. You earn wages from day one while learning multiple welding processes. Union apprenticeships produce some of the most skilled welders in the industry.

On-the-job training. Some fabrication shops and construction companies hire helpers with no welding experience and train them on the job. You start grinding, fitting, and tacking, then work your way into full welding positions. This path costs nothing but takes longer to develop full proficiency.

Step 2: Get Certified

Welding certification is different from most trade certifications. There is no single "welder's license." Instead, you take performance tests that certify you can produce quality welds in specific positions, on specific materials, using specific processes.

The American Welding Society (AWS) is the primary certifying body. Key certifications include:

  • AWS D1.1 Structural Steel: The most common certification for construction and fabrication welders. Tests your ability to weld structural steel to code.
  • AWS D1.2 Structural Aluminum: Required for aluminum structural work.
  • ASME Section IX: Required for pressure vessel and boiler welding. This is the certification that opens the door to refinery, power plant, and process piping work.
  • API 1104: Required for pipeline welding. This certification is the gateway to pipeline work and the highest paying welding jobs.

Certification validity varies by the certifying body. AWS structural certifications require maintenance every 6 months. ASME and API certifications are valid for 1 to 3 years depending on the standard. All require either re-testing or employer verification of continued welding activity to maintain. The cost per certification test ranges from $50 to $300 depending on the testing facility and the specific test.

Step 3: Choose Your Path

Welding offers more career diversity than almost any other trade:

  • Fabrication shop welder. Steady indoor work, consistent hours. Building products, structures, or equipment from blueprints. Good for people who want predictability.
  • Construction welder. Structural steel on buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. Outdoor work, travel between job sites. Union ironworkers and boilermakers earn strong wages plus benefits.
  • Pipeline welder. The highest paying welding work on land. Pipeline welders travel to where the work is, live in camps or hotels, and work long hours during pipeline construction seasons. Earnings of $100,000 or more are common for skilled pipeline welders during busy years.
  • Underwater welder. Combines commercial diving with welding. Used for offshore oil platforms, ship repair, dam maintenance, and bridge foundations. Earnings range from $50,000 for inland dive welding to $200,000 or more for saturation diving work offshore. The work is physically demanding and carries real risk.
  • Aerospace welder. TIG welding on aircraft components, rocket engines, and spacecraft. Requires the highest skill level and the most rigorous quality control. Positions at companies like SpaceX, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin pay well and offer stability.
  • Custom fabrication and art. Building custom furniture, gates, railings, sculptures, and automotive parts. This path combines welding skill with design ability. Many custom fabricators are self-employed.

What You Will Earn

The national median salary for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is approximately approximately $51,000 per year according to BLS May 2024 data. But that median hides enormous range. Entry-level production welders at fabrication shops earn $35,000 to $40,000. Experienced structural welders earn $55,000 to $70,000. Pipeline welders during busy seasons earn $100,000 or more. Underwater welders in offshore saturation diving earn $150,000 to $200,000 or more.

The variables that determine your pay are your certifications, the processes you can weld, the positions you can weld in (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead), and the materials you can work with (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, exotic alloys). Every additional capability you add increases your value.

Why Welding Is a Strong Career Choice

Every major industry needs welders. Construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, power generation, and infrastructure all depend on welding. The work cannot be fully automated because too many welding applications require human judgment about fit-up, position, and joint conditions that robots cannot handle.

Welding also offers one of the clearest paths from entry level to high income in any trade. A welder who starts with a basic MIG certificate and progressively adds stick, TIG, pipe welding, and specialized certifications can double or triple their income within 5 years without changing employers.
